Why Hikmat Road Safety?

The Hikmat Road Safety initiative was born from great pain that turned into action. In 2008, Maher Kaddoura lost his 17-year-old son Hikmat after he was hit by a car while walking on a street in Amman. The tragedy was a devastating moment, but it became a powerful drive to look for solutions that protect lives and reduce road accident victims in Jordan.

The initiative set out to make roads safer, especially around schools and local communities, in cooperation with the Greater Amman Municipality, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Public Works, the Public Security Directorate, the Traffic Department, municipalities, the Royal Automobile Club and others.

Under the Umbrella

What We’ve Achieved in Hikmat Road Safety

Safer Streets

Safer Streets

Safer Streets turned our mission at Hikmat Road Safety into practical steps on the ground. We identified some of the most dangerous streets lacking safe pedestrian crossings, and worked with the Greater Amman Municipality and the Traffic Department to rehabilitate 8 streets with pedestrian bridges, speed bumps, railings, pavements and safe crossings: simple, clear solutions that help organise pedestrian crossing, reduce risk and encourage safe behaviour on the road.

Safer Schools

Safer Schools

The road to school should be as safe as the school itself.

We targeted the most dangerous school zones according to Traffic Department data, starting in 100 school zones before expanding to 265 public schools on main roads. We made their surroundings safer with speed bumps, pedestrian crossings, railings and warning signs, alongside road safety awareness for students, to reduce traffic and pedestrian accidents and organise the movement of students and vehicles. We also made sure to share our experience to support similar initiatives across Jordan.

265public schools now have safe surroundings, where 60% of accidents used to happen

Safer Playgrounds Since 2010

Safer Playgrounds

Football matches brought neighbourhoods together, with safe play as the goal.

With a mindset built on low-cost innovation and the Falafel Theory, we put unused spaces in public schools to work, turning them into safe places to play after school hours. We rehabilitated 1,200 playgrounds in public schools across Jordan’s governorates, reducing children’s exposure to being hit by cars and giving them a safe space to move and play.

LG Harat League

LG Harat League

From a neighbourhood in Zarqa… to Real Madrid.

We launched the LG Harat League to protect children from the dangers of playing in the street, especially as pedestrian accidents were rising. More than 3,000 children from 500 neighbourhoods across Jordan took part, competing in an experience that combined sport, safety and team spirit. And the journey did not stop at the neighbourhood: the winning team earned a special trip to Real Madrid in Spain.

Safer Neighbourhoods

Safer Neighbourhoods

We rehabilitated public parks and improved road safety around them, making them safer for children and families and better serving residents and the local community. Sites included Hay Al-Zohour, the First Circle, Dahiyat Al-Rasheed, Karak and Al-Koura.

Youth Safety

Youth Safety

We launched Youth Safety with the Royal Automobile Club and the Traffic Department to involve young people in spreading a culture of road safety and strengthen their role in awareness. The program included a range of initiatives and activities, among them the “I’m Committed” campaign, the Youth Café, the “Stop, Look, Cross” campaign, awareness plays, and sports leagues in football, basketball and tennis, as well as defensive driving courses for young people, drivers and other age groups.
